The Aboriginal flag was designed by Harold Thomas (Luritja).

For over two year Clothing the Gaps fought to see the Aboriginal Flag free from the restrictions of copyright. The Government's announcement on the 25th Jan, 2022 sees the iconic flag, that has become a symbol of Aboriginal Australia, freed and available for public use after its designer, Harold Thomas, agreed to transfer its copyright to the Commonwealth following long negotiations.

This was an enormous collective win for everyone part of this movement to #FreeTheFlag. Public advocacy has paid off. The flag is now back in the public domain where it belongs as the public symbol that all flags should be.

Aboriginal Flag Meaning:

The top half of the flag is black to symbolise Aboriginal people. The red in the lower half stands for the earth and the colour of ochre, which has ceremonial significance. The circle of yellow in the centre of the flag represents the sun.

The designer Harold Thomas says the colours of the flag represent the Aboriginal people of Australia and their spiritual connection to the land.
